When I was teaching third grade in Oakland and we had a lockdown because of an armed person in the building, one of my newer students started crying and another student said, "Don't worry, Ms. Harris will never let the man with a gun get you."

Do you know what that feels like?

The pressure. The trust. The fear that I'd have to. The fear that I wouldn't be able to.

It has been 16 years since I left the classroom and I am crying while typing this because of the visceral memory.
