I think the cutthroat nature of the progressive-moderate divide in SF politics is largely personal. It's as much about trusting some people (hence giving them grace, assuming they can be pushed, are only taking bad stances to win someone else over but when elected will be good) and distrusting others (any dubious stance is even more proof they were always the worst), as it is about any concrete policy.
