Pretty much every time I’ve encountered someone who thought they were stupid it was actually one or more of * tiredness * fear/anxiety * genuinely difficult problems * executive dysfunction * lack of information * lack of practice * lack of training / poor training (topic experts are often not teaching experts) * negative preconceptions about themself becoming a self-fulfilling prophecy * time pressure

Reminds me of something that has always stuck with me from the book I learned to program with - Aaron Hillegass's "Cocoa Programming for OS X" (I had to dig up the electronic version since my original paper version got tossed when it was updated).
Essentially --- Programming is hard, you are not stupid.
