Falsehood flies, and the Truth comes limping after it. — Jonathan Swift
I look at Facebook infrequently. When I do, and when The Algorithm™ deigns to show me stuff from people I actually know, I often see posts from people who used to be part of my life many years ago but aren’t anymore. Acquaintances, former colleagues, friends from high school and college, etc., etc.
I visited Facebook the other day and saw a post from someone I haven’t seen in 15 or 20 years. They casually used the word “globalist” as if it were a normal adjective your grandmother used to use to talk about things she read in the paper and not an antisemitic dogwhistle. (If you’re unfamiliar with the term, I recommend reading The Origins of the ‘Globalist’ Slur by Ben Zimmer.)
