Some thoughts on naming your shiny new DSD
While running Party Patrol each day I've been thinking about what to name my Solanae-class Dyson Science Destoyer. I came up with several names I like, and settled on one, but I thought the thought process and other candidates might be fun reading for others, so here you go.
In canon+STO there are three obvious names associated with Dyson spheres:
- Solanae, already taken by the class
- Dyson, already taken by the prototype you fly in the FE
- Jenolan
Or you could pull a name out of other Dyson spheres in popular culture. Two of my favorites:
- Criswell
- Stapledon
Or maybe we could find a name related to spheres in mathematics. Archimedes immediately leaps out at me as a good, "spherical" name.
Then I got to thinking about the DSD's dual sci/tac nature. Is there anything interesting in the mathematics of spheres that could evoke that dual nature somehow? It turns out there is: the Banach–Tarski paradox. Stefan Banach and Alfred Tarski discovered (paraphrasing from Wikipedia) that a ball can be split into a finite number of pieces which can be reassembled into two balls the same size as the original ball.
So, yeah, I've named my ship the USS Tarski.
What are you going to name (or have already named) yours?
