(I'm from Massachusetts, and went to college in Indiana.)

I think of the core of the Midwest as the states that were once part of the Northwest Territory: Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin, & Minnesota.

I also consider Iowa and Missouri to be in the Midwest.
