Some goddamn nerve
The New York Times ran a decent editorial the other day titled Trump’s Shameful Campaign Against Transgender Americans, and published How Trump Uses Language to Attack the Idea of Transgender Identity by Amy Harmon a day later.
I think some well-meaning cis folk were surprised at the tenor of reactions from trans people and our allies, e.g. NYT Hypocrisy: Outlet Criticizes Trump's Attacks On Trans People That They Helped Usher In, by Erin Reed, The New York Times Has Some Goddamn Nerve, by Jack Mirkinson, and The New York Times Discovers Its Conscience on Trans Rights — to an Extent, by Parker Molloy.
The thing is, the New York Times has been at the epicenter of journalism’s pushing of dangerous, “Just Asking Questions”-style transphobic rhetoric from sealioning shitlords for years and years now. Their track record is clear and damning. So it’s pretty fucking rich of them to cry foul now, after all their help to embolden the right-wing’s push for transphobic policies. Policies inimical to the health, well-being, and safety of trans people.
I suppose we shouldn’t complain. All these years, they’ve simply been doing their part to uphold journalism’s sacred duty to endanger the lives of as many trans people as possible.
