Mastodon! Please lend me your wisdom. What are your strategies for increasing the diversity of speakers at a community-organised event without being tokenistic? Ideally, I would do this by expanding the community itself, of course. But it's a chicken and egg situation: if all our events feature mostly or exclusively white guys, the community doesn't look very welcoming to anyone else. Ideas, as well as suggestions for reading, are very, very welcome.

I don't know how the US can square the circle of having a tolerant, cosmopolitan, pluralist society when there’s a sizable minority that wants everyone to live under a Christian version of the Taliban. It's like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, depending on who wins the gerrymandered elections.

Something I learned about over the weekend, a wonderful pun on Wikipedia is at risk of extinction. If it happens though it'll be for the right reasons at least. On the "List of Cetaceans" page they have what you'd expect, against each whale in the list is a picture or drawing. Where they have neither they have "[cetacean needed]" which is a glorious pun! They're down to one remaining, if someone is able to document Deraniyagala's beaked whale in the wild it'd be great news for conservation, but a sad day for puns.

🧵 Since the shooting of #CharlieKirk , radical Republicans have been pushing violence-inciting claims about the shooter. The police have not apprehended the person and don't know his name. We don't know what the motive is, however, I think given the miasma of claims that "of course" a left-winger or trans person did it, it's worth exploring why the shooter very easily could be a right-wing extremist.

The "civil rights era" never ended. You are still in it. Black people are still asking for exactly the same things that they asked for in the 1960s: police reform, voting rights, and fair access to employment. And the exact same proportion of white US voters oppose it with both votes and violence.

(kids deserve many things besides that, of course; they deserve access to boisterous spaces of their peers where they can learn to exist in society, build friendships, make mistakes, and get through the struggles of becoming an adult human. but i personally find it most motivating to start from that case of the little desk in a supportive environment because so many kids are denied that.)

Every kid deserves a quiet, safe place all for themselves where they can think, learn, experiment, wonder, and discover themselves; in a home where they are safe and well fed, by people who love them and trust them and help them grow into their best selves, in a society that supports that and is thinking centuries ahead how best to sustain its people and the beautiful planet on which it exists. That's the future we're fighting for. It is attainable and we deserve it.
