Rotterdam

Hidde hosted an AB meeting in his home city of Rotterdam. I’m grateful that the heatwave had broken before got there. I missed the first half-day—I had been in Geneva that morning, and only got to in the early afternoon. Fortunately, the airport is only about a half-hour’s train ride from Rotterdam Centraal, and our meeting was, very conveniently, located in the train station itself.

This was the AB’s first meeting of its new term so, on top of progressing our existing projects, we selected this term’s chairs— and —and spent some time identifying our priorities for the coming year. It’s always great when most of us can be there in person, and turnout was particularly good this time: , Brent, Dan, 丁蔚 (Dīng Wèi), Elena, Hidde, 李安琪, Max, 太田 (Ōta)浩史 (Hiroshi), 徐嵩 (Xú Sōng), and I were all there. Andrew, , Emma, and couldn’t make it to Rotterdam and were missed.

Hidde organized a web developer meetup on Thursday night, hosted by and at Level Level, that was timed to coincide with the AB being in town. Cyd Stumpel, Dan, and Cynthia Shelly each presented, and I had a ton of fun chatting with and getting to know a bunch of the attendees.

I was extremely excited to meet Cyd (photo by her)

Friday night, after we wrapped up, we had an epic time doing karaoke at the Duke of Tokyo.

This was my first visit to Rotterdam—and only my to the Netherlands—and I really enjoyed my (brief) visit. Much of the city center was destroyed during the war, and they chose to rebuild it in a modern style, so the architecture really stands out relative to other Dutch cities.

A canal is lined with trees and buildings. The right bank is grassy, and the left is made of brick. In the distance, there’s a fountain in the center of the canal. A canal winds through a park with trees of many different species. A canal is lined with trees and buildings. The left bank is grassy, and the right is made of brick. It wouldn’t be a visit to the Netherlands without several canal photos.

& Zoë very kindly drove down to Rotterdam to have brunch with me on the moring of the 4th, and dropped me at AMS afterwards. I’m so glad we got to spend time with each other.
