Hi, I’m Tess (she/her). Is mise Treasa (sí/í). はじめまして、オコーナーです。 你好!我叫ㄎㄤㄊㄜˋㄙㄨ 你好!我叫康特苏Kāng Tè Sū kama pona! mi jan Tasa.

You may enjoy reading my blog, finding out what’s been up with me lately, or learning about what I do for a living. The site map is a comprehensive guide.

Who am I?

I’m a queer lady, Erin Jr.’s mama, and Eryn’s partner. The three of us live in San Francisco, though Eryn and I both work in Cupertino. I love to travel, I enjoy watching sports, I have the unfortunate habits of collecting keyboards and watches, and I’m illegal in over 60 countries. Read more about me below.

Some form of this site has been up since 1997, and I’ve been blogging here since 1999. You can keep up with posts by subscribing to my feed, either in a feed reader or by following hober@feedsin.space using ActivityPub (Mastodon) .

Professional

résumé

I manage the Web Standards team at Apple. I’m our W3C Advisory Committee (AC) rep and our Ecma General Assembly (GA) rep. I also serve on both the W3C Advisory Board (AB) and Ecma’s ExeCom. Sometimes I squeeze in some spec work but, for the most part, I sit in meetings all day while my team has all the fun.

I’m godawful at staying on top of email but, if you want to try, you can reach me at hober@apple.com. Mentioning hober@w3c.social on your favorite ActivityPub service should work. Mentioning hober on GitHub is unlikely to get my attention.

More about me

I grew up near Boston, went to college in Indiana, and spent the aughts in San Diego before moving to the Bay Area in the early teens.

Among other things, I’m fond of avocados, biking, craft beer, posting stuff to my blog, The Cube, my daughter, the Defenestration of Prague, dumplings, Emacs, flags, FreeBSD, my girlfriend, HTML, interspecies snorgling, kittens, Japan, legos, annoying other lego people by calling them legos, 麻婆mapo豆腐tofu, the MBTA, Muni, mechanical keyboards, puppies, Python, retail therapy, sapphic art and literature, sport, Star Trek, the New England town meeting, transit, turtles (and tortoises), Ultimate, urbanism, walking the hills of San Francisco, watches, the Web, and Zombo com.

I travel a lot (too much, really). Here are some trips I’ve been on this year:

I’m a native English speaker. I’ve a cúpla focal. I remember a little Japanese—and even less French—from when I studied each in school. I have a passing familiarity with toki pona.

Contact me

or, you know, don’t

The best way to get in touch with me is to send an iMessage to hober@me.com, to message me on some Slack workspace we have in common, or to mention hober@mastodon.social via ActivityPub.

You can email me at tess@oconnor.cx or hober0@gmail.com for personal stuff though, as noted above, I’m quite bad at email.

I may be Gen X but my attitude toward phone calls is decidedly Millennial: don’t.

Elsewhere

I’m on Bluesky, Facebook, Flickr, GitHub, Instagram, LiveJournal, Loops, Mastodon, Matrix, Pixelfed, reddit, Twitter, Threads, Tumblr, WatchCrunch, Wikipedia, and other sites, usually with the username hober.
